Q: What are the codes you post on Facebook, Twitter, and InsiderX?
A: Occasionally we get extra codes for content on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. It could be anything from a LIVE Gold subscription to an Arcade game to an add-on for a retail game. Usually we’ll mention what it is for. When we post a code, the first person to redeem the code on the LIVE Marketplace gets the content. Each code works only once, so it’s a quickest-draw race to get the content. When there are a lot of people racing to redeem the code, we like to make it exciting by removing characters from the code and replacing them with a # or ?. In the case of missing characters, the first person to correctly guess and redeem the complete code is the winner.
Q: How do I redeem a code for the Xbox LIVE Marketplace?
A: You can redeem the code on your Xbox 360 when it is connected to Xbox LIVE, or on the Web Marketplace. Each code is 5 groups of 5 letters and/or numbers. Enter the code into the relevant fields to redeem. Helpful Hint: If you’re using Internet Explorer, you can copy and paste the full code, including dashes, in the first field in the Web Marketplace’s “Redeem Code” form, and all 5 groups of characters will be inserted for you. This may or may not work on other browsers.
Q: Why does it say the code is invalid?
A: The code may be invalid because you have input incorrect mystery characters, or someone else may have redeemed it. If you have input incorrect characters, you may reinput the code to try again. If the code has already been redeemed, you have missed it. Each code works only once.

There’s actually 2 different messages depending on whether you’ve entered an invalid code or a code that’s already been used.
If it says “Please enter a valid code” you’ve guessed the missing characters incorrectly. If it says “This code has already been used” then you’ve guessed the code correctly but someone already beat you.
Also, here’s an additional tip. If you’re using Firefox, get the IE Tab extension (Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons > Search for IE Tab) and use it to view the code redemption form in IE’s rendering engine. This will allow you to copy and paste the complete code into the form while using Firefox. I discovered this trick when I noticed that you couldn’t paste the whole code into the redemption form while it was using Firefox’s rendering engine.
If you want to automatically view the code redemption form in IE mode, add https://live.xbox.com/en-AU/marketplacaccounts/RedeemToken.aspx into IE Tab’s Sites Filter (right-click on the Firefox/IE icon in your status bar, type or copy/paste the address into the “URL” field, click “Add” then click “Apply”).
